Montreal Technology Map
Posted by austin under Canada Tech Scene, Montreal
Heri who is doing a very cool job writing MontrealTechWatch recently did two maps of the Montreal Technology Community scene. Very cool to see lot’s of friends and thanks to Heri for doing this (and for the mentions).

Beautifully done map. Somehow putting words on a map has “magical” properties that listing the same words on a list just don’t have. I bet it is a brain wiring thing. (smile)
Thanks.

Hey Austin
thanks for the mention, I appreciate it.
Kempton. it’s the same for me. I can stare at that map for a long time (while I would never do that for a blogroll). I think we look for physical proximity, connections, like we do in real life, and so far, blogging and writing doesn’t allow that. I am sure we will see more presentation-related technics for the net.

It’s an interesting concept but it seems a bit silly given that the names and events on the maps represent only a part of the scene. Which in turn begs the question of why those people/events were included and why others were not. Plus this gives a false sense of geography, if indeed physical location is even supposed to be an issue on the map. (We don’t know; is it?)
This is only an issue for me because these maps have been passed around and linked to as if they are “THE” maps of the tech scene in Montreal, when in fact they are only “one person’s” maps of the tech scene. Big difference.

Blork: I agree, it is just ‘One’ map of the scene (in fact two, since Heri has evolved it) - it like the idea of other people suggesting changes and pointing out who’s missing which is what occurred between the 1st and 2nd.
I hope people will give Heri some comments and we can watch it evolve over time.

It’s an interesting idea to organize somehow tech companies, events, etc., into a map. But, I frankly don’t get this map posted here. What does this map actually tell me about how they are related? It just looks like a bunch of company names, blog names, etc, randomly labeling something vaguely resembling the Metro and Trains Banlieue systems.

Actually, what I should say is that this looks exactly like a bunch of names randomly posted on something that is exactly a map of the Metro and Trains Banlieue systems.
I definitely agree, though, that this image represents the identity of a city’s tech community. People can see themselves represented in this map and feel connected to the rest of the community. That is definitely valuable.
