Facebook in Reality
Posted by austin under Humor
I recently added a whole bunch of friends on Facebook by finally scanning my contact folder (which runs about 8k+) with Facebook.
I was pleasantly surprised to see how far Facebook has extended into my business, professional, personal and non-Internet communities. I found about 500 contacts who I wasn’t already friends with.
We all hear about the millions of users on Facebook, but there are those realization points when you discover a neighbour, grandmother or other long lost contact who is on Facebook that its mainstream adoption becomes more tangible.
For someone like me who spent so many years explaining to friends what the Internet was or what bulletin boards are (going back a few years), it’s encouraging to see how mainstream the Internet has become.
Then I saw this link cross my screen and I had to laugh.

Excellent point about those online social network systems showing how far we’ve travelled in terms of online literacy. In fact, there’s a lot to be said about what Internet-savvy people (especially teenagers, but not exclusively) are able to do in terms of managing their now very public lives.
Speaking of Facebook in real life, some Swiss botellòn coverage is quite interesting. A sociological piece in French.

Brilliant! I love it. Scary and funny.
Austin Hill, if you’re reading this, and I have no idea if you are or not, I have a request. Would you talk about your experiences as an entrepreneur with our students? These are mostly engineering students at U of T but also some from Arts & Science. We have an entrepreneurship series here and you would be an amazing speaker. Think about it. Dates are flexible. My Chair, Jonathan Rose has heard you speak and says you’re good. Please say yes. Let me know if you have any questions.

I’m currently considering getting rid of my facebook account, but I can’t figure out if doing so would be a good idea.
The main reason I was considering getting rid of it was because recently I had people who I know in real life asking me about “email” that they sent me, but I did not remember receiving.
Now I live and die by email. I check my email several times a day. I use the inbox zero stuff that Merlin Mann talks about.
Long story shot: I know when I got an email from a person.
When I tell people “I did not see that email… When did you send it?” They tell me when. I scratch my head and ask “you sent it to my gmail?” Then they say “No, I sent it to you on facebook.”
Ahhhhh. Right.
Facebook is not email. I know that this might be a dumb reason to think about throwing the baby (my facebook account) out with the bathwater, but I just cant help it.
And now I shall go think about this some more.
Cheers.

My face book friends help me in every matters and we share our thoughts, pictures, documentaries, videos especially production of Technical 3D Animation, so i would like to continue and recommend it to others.
